Might make this worth watching at least an episode or two. As the story weaves back and forth between the pro and anti-ERA camps, almost each of the 10 episodes focuses on a single character. Mrs. America’s animating power source is the intersection of psychology and activism. Then again we grew up Catholic, Italian, and very anti New Deal.

The strong female cast nails this historical show. The outward-facing unity of the Ms. gang — a Justice League of liberal feminists, each with her own fabulous look — contrasts with internal disagreement based largely on life experience.

You might be better off playing the power game the way Schlafly played it – look at where it got her. Dropping off home-baked bread and jam in Congressmen’s offices turned out to be a jaw-droppingly effective lobbying strategy. Comments do not represent the views of Reason.com or Reason Foundation. Created and mostly written by Mad Men screenwriter-producer Dahvi Waller, and co-produced and frequently co-directed by Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck (Captain Marvel), the FX on Hulu limited series brings many leaders of mid-century American feminism into one storyline, and rarely passes up a chance to pack four or five of them into the same room, the better to showcase how different they all were. Also, we know perfectly well that, if ratified, the ERA would have been read by the courts as a charter of “abortion rights.”. I am not very excited about this show, but I can give you an opportunity to watch what it is, I have seen a movie with an ideological connotation and it shocks me because it is like a justification for your ideas and that is may be debatable.

It’s a very milquetoast amendment, nothing in it controversial. © 2020 Reason Foundation | Privacy Policy | Accessibility | Terms Of Use, Food Issues That Should've Been Front and Center in the 2020 Presidential Election, Gavin Newson's California Business Closures Are 'Autocratic, One-Man Rule,' Argues New Lawsuit, Libertarian Party Hopes for Victory in 2 Wyoming State House Races, How This Summer Changed—and Failed To Change—American Policing. Extremely biased comment in the subtitle that assumes that supporting the ERA is equivalent to being a feminist. That amendment, which simply states that women cannot be deprived of rights on the basis of sex, was brought down almost singlehandedly by Phyllis Schlafly, played by Cate Blanchett with the real Schlafly’s beehive hairdo and prim country-club lady’s wardrobe. And even without the ERA, look at where we’ve wound up on the separate bathrooms issue.

There is no need to be familiar with the histories of these real-life women, as the series gracefully fills in the background, and the actors make them dynamic individuals whose ideas and strategies change as the fight goes on.

Schlafly was a well-to-do wife and mother from middle America who wrote political books and spouted what she called stay-at-home “traditional family values” while organising a powerful conservative movement. The show clearly takes the pro-ERA side, and Blanchett does a remarkable job of keeping our attention without encouraging admiration for Schlafly. Arriving in the midst of this all-consuming pandemic, the series is, oddly enough, a great distraction.

It gives liberal courts more excuses to undermine other parts of the constitution that new amendments were supposedly not meant to address. Clive Barker Has Such Sights to Show You in HBO’s. What matters more is the complexity and generosity of the show’s vision of American life, and the crackling ensemble of its famous heroines — including Gloria Steinem (Rose Byrne), Shirley Chisholm (Uzo Aduba), Bella Abzug (Margo Martindale), Betty Friedan (Tracey Ullman), and Jill Ruckelshaus (Elizabeth Banks) — jammed into Azbug’s Washington, D.C. office to envision the future. There’s a scene where a woman in a swimsuit is walking away from the camera, and my first reaction was “It’s Katharine Hepburn!” and it turned out to be so. The series doesn’t flinch from showing how the entitled or simply oblivious behavior of white feminists alienates their African-American sisters, whether it’s Margaret Sloan (Bria Henderson), an openly lesbian editor at Ms., enduring Steinem’s rejection of her proposed article on racial discrimination in the workplace, or Chisholm digging in her heels when Abzug pressures her to end her trailblazing but numerically doomed presidential candidacy. The series manifests an uncommon sophistication in showing us that both Phyllis and Gloria Steinem are beginning to worry about their respective movements. mrs america review

Thank god this bullshit never got passed.

The cast is filled with familiar faces, which gives the series a rich texture. So all it really means now is that young men have to spend 5 minutes to fill out and mail a postcard, which young women are exempted from. With its echoes of a beauty pageant and a far-distant culture, the title Mrs America perfectly captures the retro setting of this smart, colourful series about the 1970s battle to add the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the US Constitution. Lawmakers are bribing citizens with a tiny tax break in exchange for the power to jack up income tax rates down the line. The leftish Vanity Fair waited until actually watching Mrs. America to announce in a headline that it "Tells the Villain's Story.". At one point, Schlafly and her allies — including Banks’ Ruckelshaus, often the lone conservative at ERA strategy meetings, and Schlafly’s pal Alice, a fictionalized composite character played by Sarah Paulson — figure out that the best way to appeal to the status quo, including centrist and conservative women, is by pampering and flattering them, rather than, in Friedan’s cautionary words, “telling them marriage is prostitution and alimony is war reparations.” Thus is the Illinois state legislature enticed to reject the ERA, based in part on conservative women delivering loaves of fresh bread to politicians, embracing the “happy homemaker” stereotype that Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique suggested was a cover for dissatisfaction.

Might make this worth watching at least an episode or two. As the story weaves back and forth between the pro and anti-ERA camps, almost each of the 10 episodes focuses on a single character.
